world's 1.2 billion catholics as he prepares to be installed tuesday. >> such a busy week there. yet, more trouble for carnival cruise lines, not one, not two, but three separate ships experiencing mechanical issues just weeks after the nightmare voyage of the "triumph." that's having cruise fans questioning whether sailing is even a good idea. so what are your chances of getting sick or stranded at sea. the pentagon suddenly strengthening the country's west coast defensive against a possible nuclear attack by north korea. reena ninan has the story from washington. the big question so many wondering, why now? >> reporter: that's right. good morning to you. this is all part of getting ahead of the north korea threat. in fact, if you want to see how this country is progressing, in the past it's taken years between these long-range missile 'tises. in the past year alone it's only a matter of months between the tests. keep in mind the new leader of north korea is young, 29 years old and, bianna, he wants to

show he's continuing to consolidate military power. >> he clearly does and obvious that the administration used this as a serious threat. what else were they looking to do. >> reporter: they are looking to put an additional radar in japan to give them an early warning detection system but the focus on these missile interceptors looking to increase by 50% and it'll come with a $1 billion price tag, bianna. >> we certainly have seen an increase in provocations have that young leader. >> just scary story. a look at other major developing stories, abc's rob nelson is here for ron claiborne. >> good morning, guys. good to see you guys. we begin with that small plane crash in ft. lauderdale, florida. the plane carrying three passengers. abc's lisa stark has the story. >> reporter: this scene of devastation after the small twin engine piper plane smashed into a parking lot near the airport. the plane was engulfed in flames. cars were damaged and burning

too. eyewitnesses say the plane had just taken off from ft. lauderdale's general aviation airport when it banked right and suddenly went down. >> looked out and i saw the plane just bank right into the ground behind the star light lounge and it exploded and then i kept hearing explosions. >> couldn't believe it. i was amazed how the plane went down so quickly and it -- the explosion and then the fire immedia immediately preceding it. it was pretty horrific. >> reporter: firefighters rushed to put out the flames but toofs fee late to save the three on the plane. this comes as federal officials are launching a new effort to reduce accidents involving private aircraft whichclaim nearly 500 lives every year. for "good morning america," lisa stark, abc news, ft. myers,

florida. >> thank you, lisa. wildfires are threatening over 751,000 acres and provoking hundreds of evacuation orders. that was only 5% contained and is near the scene of the reservoir fire that destroyed 259 homes. the cause is still under investigation. and the market's biggest rally in more than 16 years ended on friday when the dow dipped below 15,000, slightly below an all-time high reached back in october of '07 and won a ten-day winning streak and that was caused by investors' worries of hiezing fuel prices. president obama asked congress to authorize spending 2 billion over the next ten years researching electric cars and other alternative fuels to cut american independence on foreign oil. he made the remarks when touring a reek research facility in chicago friday. the president proposes that the

initiative 0 would be funded by revenue by offshore drilling. an expansion of background checks took one step closer to law friday. it was approved by lawmakers and now sent to governor john hickenlooper expected to sign within two weeks. colorado was the site that mass shooting in an aurora movie theater last july. from the come on man, two oregon girl scout troops selling cookies to attend credits to go to summer camp. they were duped in blowing they made a massive sale of 6 you thousand boxes. but they learned that the order was all a hoax and now they have to sell those cookies worth $24,000. the girls are holding a special sale today to try and move the thin mints and others so they can get to go to camp. let's chip in and get some samoas. do something here. that's rough.

no questions were allowed. this was after all a papal audience, not a press conference. in brief remarks the pope said he chose the name francis because of his concern for the poor. [ speaking a foreign language ] the poor, the poor, he said. it was just one more sign that pope francis intends to be more accessible and more informal than past pontiffs. >> from the moment he said i will be called francis, that was a signal and all the rest are very small but significant signals. >> reporter: when he left his guest house the new pope paid his own bill. when he left the sistine chapel after being elected pope he chose to ride in a minivan with other cardinals instead of in the papal limousine. even his shoes, regular black one, not the expensive leather red shoes that pope francis favored. the new down to earth pontiff has been working the phones.

he called a jesuit residence to thank the director for his congratulatory letter but the person who answered didn't believe it was the pope. >> seriously, the pope said, it's pope francis. when he called a married couple, their 10-year-old son answered. mom, dad, the boy called out, it's the pope. but the papal charm couldn't stop a swirling controversy. accusations that 30 plus years ago he failed to denounce the jailing and killing of thousands of political opponents of the military government that ruled his native argentina. the charges drew a forceful vatican denial. >> there has never been an accusation concrete or credible in his regard. >> reporter: the vatican said the future pope actually protected many dissidents from persecution. what is very unlikely that controversy is going to go away any time soon but for now the pope, the new pope is enjoying an extraordinary honeymoon at the end of the event this morning, he got huge applause

the company's ships have experienced malfunctions, but are these new black eyes for carnival bad enough or big enough that they could turn off vacationers and hurt the entire cruise industry? abc's gio benitez has been looking into that. >> good morning. so many questions just this week. carnival announced a full review of its entire fleet of cruise ships, but within just hours of that announcement, the news broke, more carnival ships in troubled waters. this morning passengers of the carnival cruise ship the "dream" arrive home while 2,000 passengers of the carnival "legend" make their way back to tampa. an emergency generator problem crippled the "dream." a towboat he skorted the "elation" because of tech issues. >> clearly there is a larger problem going on at carnival specifically. >> reporter: what carnival calls minor issues, passengers call

reminders of those deplorable conditions on the carnival "triumph" just weeks ago. this woman sent us a video from the "dream." >> i really didn't want a repeat of the "triumph." >> reporter: it's not just congress. days ago people were getting sick with the norovirus on a royal caribbean cruise. so why all the problems on the seas? year after year. >> while they're in a rush to do that and build ships big enough to hold thousands and thousands of people, we don't know what's guessing missed. >> reporter: it can be expensive to take ships off the grid for maintenance. >> if you maximize the revenue and you try to keep them -- the boats in this case, the ships moving as fast as possible back out to sea. >> reporter: carnival tells us "each of these situations was different, technical issues will occur from time to time. we take each one seriously." and surprisingly, even with all of these headlines about problems on cruise ships, more and more people are going on cruises so it seems there is no immediate impact on the industry. we'll see what happens, though,

over time. >> no impact on the industry but the carnival stock has taken a hit this past week. i've never been on a cruise. we were talking about this. >> you're a cruise fan. >> i haven't been on that many cruises but i won bingo when i was on the "qe 2." why bingo with a 10-year-old a separate question. we turn to the story that divided the small ohio community of steubenville. a teenage girl allegedly assaulted by two high school football players. they're on trial today and she is expected to testify. alex perez joins us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, good morning, bianna prosecutors called more than 20 witnesses already including a number of teenagers around the night of the alleged incident. >> please rise. >> reporter: nearly 12 hours of testimony in court friday including from a fellow big red football player who admitted to using his iphone to record video of the 16-year-old girl during parts of the alleged sexual

assault and then deleting the video the following day. it was one of those moments you realize you did something wrong and stupid, he said on the witness stand so i deleted it. trent mayes and malik richmond are charged with sexually assaulting the girl after a night of wild partying last august. prosecutors argue the girl was too drunk to give coming sent. the defense argues that mayes and richmond did not commit rape that night. a friend testified she received a text two days after the alleged incident where the accuser described not even knowing sagetly what happened. i wake up naked like i seriously have no memory at all. it's scary not knowing. another testified he saw her unresponsive on the floor during the alleged incident. she wasn't moving, she wasn't talking. she wasn't participating, he said. mayes and richmond were both considered standouts on the steubenville big red football team. the case ignited a national firestorm on social media after this picture went viral.

mayes and richmond carrying the 16-year-old girl who appears to be unconscious by her hands and feet. then this youtube video with someone who hadn't witnessed the alleged incident talking about it. 18-year-old evan wesley recorded it and can be heard laughing in the background. he testified he did witness some of the alleged sexual assault. he says he regrets posting the video and initially making light of what he saw. i felt i owed some people some apologies and i did have to do some things to fix it. and the 16-year-old girl herself could be called as a witness as testimony continues today and could run through the weekend. if necessary. dan and bianna. >> alex, thank you. great to have dan abrams here as our legal analyst. how important is the alleged victim's testimony. >> typically it's absolutely crucial. in this case it's not as important because she doesn't remember exactly what happened. this is a case where the investigation was spurred in large part through social media in large part based on that

photo you saw and other people's accounts of what happened. that is actually more important than even her testimony. itself. >> as we said it has divided that small town. >> absolutely. this is still a juvenile case, though. juvenile court judge. they could face prison time up to or at actually juvenile detention center until they're 21 years old. >> over to ginger zee. >> hey there the minneapolis area got a little snow in the last couple of days and it's more snow than that in north dakota. let's look at pictures out of minnesota from overnight. a lot of spinouts. they had a couple of clipper systems, fast moving drop about 1 to 6 inches of snow now in michigan and moving to the east. so ohio, cleveland, that kind of area going to get some this morning and then as it goes east behind it super cold air so as you celebrate st. patrick's day a lot of parades will be on the chilly side. 37 detroit. new york city, 39 only for a high with a breeze, it's not even going to feel that warm. a new storm targeting the

northern plain, eastern montana through the dakotas starting to see winter watches popping up that will take place monday and tuesday as it drops through the northern plains. in huge contrast check that out, tucson, three days in a row of record high temperatures. yesterday was 94 and look what it's doing at yosemite where it was 65 degrees. beautiful snow, a little more than last year and beautiful waterfalls. another not as hot day, 74 for albuquerque. that's the big picture. a check now a little closer to home.

travel long distances but the last week and a half for may, 9-year-old veteran of the race has been a harrowing journey. the iditarod is one of the most grueling races in the world. to have the best team possible, jamaican musher newton marshall was loaned may, a strong lead dog to guide the sled through the snow and frigid conditions. >> the guy i used to work with said you're going to use my dog and i said, come on. >> reporter: but just days in the up to two-week race fmarshal got into trouble. >> i tugged on the harness and was excited and jumped hard enough and got loose. >> reporter: marshall says he searched for seven hours, but couldn't go very far because he had to take care of his 1 other dogs. >> i was just very nervous and frightened. i lost my dog.

it's believe may took off to the next check point in nikolai and back to rohn, through the treacherous rainy pass and spotted several times away and nearly 400 miles and seven days later finally caught only 40 miles from where the race started and nearly 50 miles from where she lives with her owners anna bondarenko and jim landreau. >> she's determined. >> reporter: how did may survive in the wilderness on her own? >> even if they don't have water they can eat snow. >> the frail pooch was found on the trail and handed over to the owner's neighbor stan smith who's pampering her paws until anna and jim return home. >> it's beyond a miracle she survived this. >> pretty great story. because she took off her team had to withdraw from the race

a 550-pound lion named couscous escaped and pounced on dianna hanson killing her instantly. >> the lion has been taken care of. >> reporter: pauls was the first person on the scene and is speaking out exclusively to abc news. >> i came around the corner and i saw her behind the bush on the ground and i called to her and couscous was near her. she looked as if she was unconscious. there was no response. >> reporter: she says she's been overcome with grief and that hanson's death was a terrible accident. >> couscous is not to blame. he was just being a cat. he was just being a lion. >> reporter: the owner of the sanctuary took us for a first look inside the cage to the very spot where deputies were forced to kill couscous. he believes hanson left a gate open, a fatal tragic mistake. >> the door ha shouldn't have
